Lot 4567
Constantine I, 307/310-337. Follis (Bronze, 19 mm, 2.43 g, 6 h), a contemporary imitation of an issue from Arelate, irregular mint, after 328. CONSTΛN-TINVS ΛVG Laureate head of Constantine I to right. Rev. PROVIDEN-TIAF ΛVGG / S - F / SCONST Camp gate with two turrets and no doors; above, star. Cf. RIC 318 (for prototype). Very minor weakness, otherwise, extremely fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, formed since 1969.

The style of this coin is clearly unofficial, indicating that it is a contemporary 'barbarous' imitation. On the official coinage, the laurel wreath was replaced in the 'S-F/ PCONST' emission with a pearl diadem. The reverse is particularly charming, featuring a curiously cramped camp gate.
